Kia Ora from the Theatre Manager
Gus Sharp
As we speak, construction work on the Waikato Regional Theatre continues to forge ahead, and we're happy to report significant progress.
Erection of the structural steel framework is underway and, as you will see below, we're starting to see the Theatre's defining shape appear out of the ground. It is awe-inspiring to witness the design come to life.
In parallel, the pouring of concrete continues apace, ensuring the foundations of the Theatre will be rock solid. We understand this phase might not be the most glamorous chapter in this saga, but rest assured, we're leaving no stone unturned to guarantee a sturdy and enduring venue for our community.
Beyond the physical construction, we continue to be well pleased with the ongoing response to our ‘Take a Seat’ donation appeal - we've now ‘sold’ nearly 200 seats to keen Theatre supporters from near and far. This is a real testament to the eagerness of our community to get back into audience mode.
I've been speaking to lots of community groups about what makes the Waikato Regional Theatre special, as well as how theatres work in general. If you have a community group, a business team or just a bunch of friends who would like to find out more about the Theatre - please let me know!
Theatre site from the air in July 2023
Over recent months the view from the street hasn’t really changed, but from above you can now see the outline and some of the internal structure of the Theatre, including the curve of the orchestra pit. These great drone pics were taken by Cameron Neilson of Foster Group.

Nancy’s five-year plan reaches fruition
Nancy Caiger at the Waikato Regional Theatre site last year.
When the call went out in 2018 for generous locals to get behind the new Waikato Regional Theatre, Nancy Caiger decided she was in “boots and all”.
The determined everyday philanthropist has donated time and money to a variety of causes over the years, including the arts, health services, food and budgeting support and women’s giving.
Now, as the Theatre starts to rise up out of the riverbank in the Hamilton CBD, Nancy has completed the commitment she made five years ago to make a series of donations adding up to a significant contribution towards this exciting new performing arts centre.
